I just updated to 8.3.1 and now activating the screen saver takes quite a while before the first image is shown. then a while for each image to be displayed until the screen is full. After that it runs at normal speed.

I just tried a test I stopped the timer on my phone after 2 minutes and the first photo had still not shown.

The last version I used before this update ran fine and the first photo was shown after a few seconds. I wanted to re-install and see but I don't have an installer ( I download to my ram disk usually ). Is there a way I can get the previous release to test?

unfortunately older versions are not available. Anyway I don't think the gPhotoShow version make any difference, changes in the latest versions are not relevant and should not cause such a slowdown.
It is possible the slowdown is caused by an update to your system. Do you have any antivirus or security program besides windows defender ?
Did you try to restart windows ?

as a test I changed it to a directory with 40 images and it still took a long time to load the first image.. then second... the 3rd image took the longest.
The gPhotoShow_err.log is empty.

I have no idea why it says I have 12 monitors (I have 3)

I have restarted windows several times since I installed the gphotoshow pro update a few days ago.

This is the problem:

I have no idea why on some systems DirectX is so slow creating textures but it's an operation that can't be avoided. I am sure this slowness doesn't depend on gPhotoShow version, the code is the same since version 7. Probably something changed on your system, maybe an updated driver or something else.
In version 8.4 I slightly changed the code, you can try it and see if it improves:

I have tried the 8.4.1 you supplied and it made no real difference. I've installed the newest drivers from Nvidia and that made no difference.

Can you post the log lines beginning with "DXGraphics::TextureFromBitmapEx:" ? The first group is enough, just to see how much time take step 1 and 2. If step 1 is fast, maybe a workaround is possible.
Anyway I can't understand why a low end Celeron is fast while some high end NVidia adapter are 1000 times slower

it is odd since my machine is a dual CPU Xeon system with 64Gb of ram. 8 cores per CPU with hyper-threading. Times 2. So 32 cores in total. Should be more than enough to crunch an image.

I am afraid I can't do anything to workaround this issue.
step 1 is the time needed to create an empty DirectX texture, a single DirectX api call.
Probably it's a misbehavior in NVidia drivers, I wrote to NVidia developers forum to see if it is a known issue.

For now only solution is to switch to Standard 2D transitions.
