Video / GIF File Support

Post by NamebrandHipster »

Hello,

I recently purchased the pro version of the wallpaper program.
I'm loving it so far!

I'm curious if it supports video or GIF formats for backgrounds? I'm not finding the settings for that anywhere, but I've also seen people mention videos as if they are supported.

Thanks for any help!

Hello,
Wallpaper Slideshow is a background changer, as the name says it is used to change the desktop background but does not manage the background. The desktop background is always managed by windows and it does not support animated gifs or videos. For this reason WallpaperSS does not support videos or animations
Some programs allow you to view videos and animations on the background using some trick, for example gPhotoShow Pro has a mode called "Desktop Slideshow" that allows you to play images, videos and animations on the background. Unfortunately the windows 11 24h2 update has changed the way windows manages the background and many programs no longer work, the trick uses undocumented features and when Microsoft changed the way the handles the background the trick stopped working.
Now there is another way to display video and animations on the desktop on win11 24h2 but it's more complicated and there are some limitations.

Where did you read this?
Wallpaper Slideshow Pro works fine on windows 11, with 24h2 Microsoft changed the way win handles the desktop and this caused some issues to programs using undocumented features to display animated desktop

I had just interpreted that from what I've been reading. BTW I created a topic with the solution.

The issue is caused by the changes in Win11 24H2, in order to add new features Microsoft changed the way it draws the desktop. This causes problems to all programs NOT using the documented windows API to change wallpaper.
Wallpaper Slideshow Pro uses an undocumented feature only to detect if windows supports smooth wallpaper change, this was fixed on v5.2.5, but to change wallpaper it uses the standard windows API so it should work and it does on all systems I tested (4 PCs in our office). From user feedback and reading on the internet it seems there are still issues with desktop wallpapers on some systems, here is the list of known issues:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... 370msgdesc

edit:
WallpaperSS uses two different windows API to change wallpaper
If Smooth Wallpaper change is enabled it uses ActiveDesktop API otherwise uses the older SystemParametersInfo(SPI_SETDESKWALLPAPER,...)
Since wallpaper change transition is performed by windows using one API or the other doesn't actually change the way wallpaper is updated but in case of problems it could be worth trying to change that setting
