PhotoWall and collages algorithms were designed to work as they are now and there is no way to change them, images are cropped to adapt them to the positions.

to remove the background image in collages you must use the Filters settings:
- Open WallpaperSS Settings
- Click on Options
- Go to Filters page
- Untick the option "Use only one filter"
- On the dropdown near monitor ID choose "Background"
- On the drop down labeled "Display:" choose "No ...

Pause/resume sound is already present.
To really pause/resume you must also make sure the option "Perform stop/play instead of Pause/Resume" in sounds page is not ticked

Check the groups, it is possible you set a group that contain no files
