I don't find it that straightforward. There are a lot of parameters and some of them are very confusing (eg stretch & crop).

Unfortunately, that solution is not possible. Given the way the program is designed, it is not feasible.

What is possible depends heavily on your folder layout. If you have a limited number of subfolders within a main directory, you can add the subfolders to the list instead of the main directory. However, if the subfolders are deeply nested, it becomes impossible.

The problem was caused by two memory leaks: one in the filter applied to scrapbook background images, and another in the handling of side-by-side vertical images.
It's now fixed in gPhotoShow Pro 11.0.6.

With version 11, that amount of memory usage for so few files isn't normal.

20 GB is a lot. Memory usage depends on:
- the number of images in the scanned directories (10,000 files can take up 1 MB just for the filenames)
- the images currently being displayed plus the next one already loaded

Normal memory usage ranges from 200 MB to 500 MB.

The issue was caused by the empty background field. When that field is empty the plugin doesn't display the clock.
Now I fixed the issue. First the is warning in the dialog box, then if the field is empty or the file can't be found the plugin uses a black frame

simply add the root folder to Images list. Nothing more. The program will automatically scan all subfolders.
