Stopped working

Post by laurin1 »

I've had almost zero issues with gPhotoShow Pro for years now, and have it running on 3 machines. Suddenly, on one of my machines, it will no longer start...or will start and exit immediately. If I leave it idle, it just never launches, if I choose Start Screen Saver from Control SS, my screen either goes black for 2 seconds and then goes straight to the lock screen, or it just flickers and does the same, but nothing I can do will make the screen saver launch. It started about a week ago.

I can load the config screen and I have changed no settings in months.

Ok, I just found the error log file and there's a whole bunch of these:

27-8-2021 19:39:24 : Error 2 loading file=E:\Users\keithdavis\Pictures\2005\Sonny April 2005\scan0068.jpg
27-8-2021 19:47:13 : Error 2 loading file=E:\Users\keithdavis\Pictures\2005\Sonny April 2005\scan0073.jpg
27-8-2021 21:48:41 : Error 2 loading file=E:\Users\keithdavis\Pictures\2005\Sonny April 2005\scan0070.jpg
28-8-2021 1:33:51 : Error 2 loading file=E:\Users\keithdavis\Pictures\2005\Sonny April 2005\scan0065.jpg
28-8-2021 3:16:44 : Error 2 loading file=E:\Users\keithdavis\Pictures\2005\Sonny April 2005\scan0063.jpg
28-8-2021 5:7:41 : Error 2 loading file=E:\Users\keithdavis\Pictures\2005\Sonny April 2005\scan0057.jpg

1) ok, maybe I have a disk issue, as those files should be there and they are definitely not
2) why does gPhotoShowPro think they are there?

Did you notice the log date ? "28-8-2021 5:7:41" those errors are very old

Anyway about your issue, there are a lot of possible causes.
First of all no screen saver starts by itself, it is always started by windows when the system is idle. So if the screen saver doesn't start you should check if you have some program that prevents the screen saver from starting (for example video players)
Then if gPhotoShow starts then closes but there are no errors in the log it means it detected a mouse movement or something that caused it to exit.
If you configured gPhotoShow to play video it is possible that is the video player to crash, in this case gPhotoShow closes without any error.

I use CrashPlan and those files have been missing for a long time, it seems, so why is gPhotoShowPro still trying to load them? Ha, those are old log entries, I just looked at the date. but it was still trying to do that as late as 4-5-2023. Last entires in that file are these:

7-10-2023 5:59:52 : gPhotoShow Pro 8 64-bit v8.5.4.1230 x64 (scr) started on 2023-10-07 05:59:51
7-10-2023 5:59:52 : Command Line: /s
7-10-2023 5:59:52 : LoadImgListIdx: tot files num. is wrong, list discarded (26879,26878)

So, back to square one.

Enabled Extended Logging, but nothing in current in either log or error log.

Oh!! If I click Preview, it will launch! But if I click Start Screen Saver from Control SS or wait for idle, it will not launch.

Then it's a windows issue. If you start the screen saver from ControlSS it's same action as waiting for idle. It doesn't start the program directly, it asks windows to start the configured screen saver.
Try to change screen saver. Wait for it to start, then go back to gPhotoShow. Usually this fixes the issue.

Well, of course, a Windows restart seems to have fixed the issue...for now. :)

I haven't thought about rebooting either, in fact that's the first thing to try :D
